How to Choose an IVF & Embryology Fellowship Institute in Delhi NCR: A Practical Checklist
Choosing an IVF and embryology fellowship is one of the most important decisions a gynaecologist or life-science graduate makes on the way into reproductive medicine. The right programme builds genuine procedural confidence; the wrong one leaves you with a certificate but little bench or theatre experience. Delhi NCR has a large number of fertility centres and training programmes, so it pays to compare them carefully.
This checklist covers the questions worth asking any IVF and embryology fellowship institute before you enrol.
1. How much of the training is genuinely hands-on?
Ask for a clear breakdown of the timetable: how many hours are spent in lectures, how many on simulators or animal/discard material, and how many in supervised clinical or laboratory work. A good fellowship moves you progressively from observation to assisted procedures to supervised independent work.
Useful questions:
- Will I perform procedures myself, or mainly observe?
- What is the trainee-to-mentor ratio in the lab and in the procedure room?
- Is there a logbook, and who signs off each competency?
2. Is the curriculum aligned with current standards?
Reproductive medicine changes quickly. The curriculum should reflect current international guidance (such as ESHRE and ASRM recommendations), the WHO 6th edition semen analysis manual for andrology, and Indian regulation under the Assisted Reproductive Technology (Regulation) Act, 2021 and its rules. A programme that never mentions documentation, consent, witnessing and registry requirements is not preparing you for real practice in India.
3. Clinical track or embryology track?
Fellowships usually split into two streams:
- Clinical (reproductive medicine) fellowships for MBBS doctors with MD/MS/DNB/DGO in Obstetrics & Gynaecology. These focus on infertility work-up, ovarian stimulation, ultrasound monitoring, IUI, oocyte pick-up and embryo transfer.
- Clinical embryology programmes for life-science, biotechnology and medical graduates who want to work in the IVF laboratory: gamete handling, IVF and ICSI, embryo culture and grading, and cryopreservation.
Make sure the programme you choose matches your qualification and the career you actually want.
4. Who are the faculty?
Look for faculty who are currently practising - clinicians running active IVF programmes and embryologists working at the bench. Ask who will supervise you day to day, not just who appears on the brochure.
5. What exposure will you get to real case variety?
Infertility is diverse: PCOS, poor ovarian reserve, endometriosis, tubal disease, male factor, recurrent implantation failure. Ask how the programme ensures you see this range, whether through live cases, case discussions or protocol-planning sessions.
6. Assessment and certification
A meaningful fellowship assesses competence, not just attendance. Ask how you will be evaluated (practical assessments, viva, case presentations) and what the certificate states about the skills you have demonstrated.
7. Location, schedule and practical support
For working doctors, the schedule matters. Check whether the programme offers weekday or weekend batches, whether the training site is easy to reach from Delhi, Noida and Gurgaon, and whether accommodation help is available for outstation candidates.
8. Career support after the fellowship
Ask what happens after you finish: is there mentorship, help with setting up services, or support finding positions in IVF centres? Speak to past trainees if you can - their experience is the most honest indicator of quality.
A quick comparison table to use
When you shortlist institutes, compare them on the same points:
- Hours of supervised hands-on work
- Procedures you will personally perform
- Faculty who will actually supervise you
- Curriculum alignment with current guidelines and the ART Act
- Assessment method and logbook
- Batch size
- Post-course support
